THE KYLA BROX BAND printable biog page 1 printable biog page 2

"As the daughter of legendary bluesman Victor Brox. Kyla was genetically pre-destined to sing the blues, but even in his wildest dreams her old man couldn't have imagined a voice like this:'
Rae Lesson organiser of The Lift Festival.

The youngest of five kids with all three sisters and her brother having done their time in The Victor Brox Blues Train, finally the baton was passed to Kyla in 1993. when at 12 years old, in a baptism of fire, she took to the stage at Manchester's prestigious Band on the Wall.

Numerous gigs, festivals and tours as far a field as Australia, and a handful of cd's with The Victor Brox Blues Train, have ensured that Kyla has had the proper schooling in her craft. That girl has literally been steeped in the blues.

With the blues apprenticeship tickling over nicely. Kyla still made time to indulge other musical tastes. Learning to play the flute added an unusual but beautiful texture to the blues and learning to play the guitar furthered her passion for songwriting (although it's extremely rare for her to play it on stage).

Spending time in the studio recording for other bands and learning the ropes at the same time. A brief exploration of opera opened up a new side to her voice and endless vocal possibilities, as anyone who has heard her perform will testify. Considering her mother is an opera singer this was bound to happen, but inevitably, it wasn't right for Kyla.

The Kyla Brox Band was formed in 2001 with their first gig in June of that year. They produced their first recording in July and by August were playing The Great British R&B festival in Colne.

A change of line-up in autumn 2002 created the magical combination of musicians now in The Kyla Brox Band.

They are:

  • Kyla Brox: vocals & flute
  • Danny Blomeley: bass guitar
  • Marshal Gill: guitar
  • Anthony Curtis Marshall: saxaphones
  • Phil Considine: drums

They are young musicians who have done their Stint with Victor Brox. Most of them beginning their careers in what is fondly remembered as Victor's "Child Slavery Band", when the average age of the band was 17 .... including the ancient Victor!

It's hardly surprising that the band perform with such ease and natural tightness when the bonds were formed at such a young age.

Although they've known each other and performed together at various stages for more than 10 years, the sound is still fresh because each band member has kept their individuality and they have always maintained their personal musical projects. So each one instinctively feels the blues, yet each one brings something new to the mix, too, with sparkling talent.

Often described as a "super group", each musician is truly a master of their instrument.

The hard-working band has been causing a stir performing countless gigs and getting great reviews.

An extensive tour of Australia in 2003 and 2004 saw them sharing the bill with the legendary Johnny Johnson and also the Fabulous Thunderbirds, In fact, The Kyla Brox Band's vibrant performances were so attractive that they managed to entice the audiences away from the old classics!

They set tounges wagging at this year's Burnley National Blues Festival, after giving a stunning performance with Jan Harrington and Ken lending. This eye-catching talent can stand up to anyone.

Acoustic

Kyla also performs acoustically with the outstanding guitarist. Danny Blomeley. His unique style on the acoustic is the perfect complement to Kyla's voice.

The space allows Kyla to stretch out vocally and Danny has the chance to take the songs in any direction he chooses. He manages to make the guitar sound like a whole band and people often find it difficult to believe that he's the sole instrument.

The duo is sometimes augmented by the band's saxophone player, Tony Marshall, whose sensitive playing, which is drenched with emotion, slips into the mix effortlessly and makes for a very moving trio.
